Who We Are
Beverley, Emma and Tali are supported by a team of strategists, media experts, copywriters, social media specialists, and client service managers.
Beverley Houston
Founder and CEO
Location: Cape Town
Bev doesn’t just manage reputations; she builds them with the precision of a seasoned journalist. After years spent shaping the news agenda as News Editor for The Sunday Times and Business Day online, she founded Be-cause to fill the gap for strategic, goal-led communication in complex industries. Whether she is navigating the intricacies of renewables with Red Cap Energy or the fast-moving world of fintech with Payfast, Bev is known for unearthing the core motivations that move audiences. Her ‘on-the-job’ training as a solo mum by choice to her daughter provides a constant lesson in empathy and agility – qualities that define her leadership and her commitment to helping clients articulate their impact.
Emma Proctor
Healthcare comms specialist
Location: London
Emma’s work sits at the intersection of science and human storytelling. With a Master’s in Global Healthcare Management from Imperial College London business school — she brings a rare blend of academic rigour and commercial strategy to the Be-cause team. Having started her journey with us over a decade ago, Emma is now our lead on the ground in the UK. She has a reputation for being the “calm in the storm” during high-stakes launches and reputation-shaping moments. Having cut her teeth in global consultancies and with pharma giants, Emma chose to skip the corporate slide decks in favour of doing what she does best: helping biotech, med-tech, and global health innovators articulate not just what they do, but why it matters to the world.
Dr Tali Hoffman
Science and climate change comms specialist
Location: Cape Town
Tali believes that science only truly matters when it leads to action. With a PhD in Zoology and 15 years spent translating complex research, she has mastered the art of making data both compelling and useful. While her expertise spans multiple disciplines, her heart is in climate change adaptation – helping the world’s most critical stories find the right audience at the right time. Her journey with Be-cause began with a fortunate reconnection with her friend, Bev (a friendship that started behind the counter of an ice cream shop at 16). By combining Tali’s scientific rigour with Bev’s strategic vision, they quickly realised they could turn ‘complex science’ into ‘collective impact’. For Tali, it’s about ensuring that brilliant research doesn’t just sit on a shelf, but drives the change we actually need.
