Injecting fresh air and vitality into the hearts of female fitness enthusiasts countrywide, Adventure Boot Camp’s back to basics approach to open-air health and fitness has generated an influx of interest amongst diet-weary women across the country. Promoting health and nutrition as a lifestyle priority, Adventure Boot Camp provides women of all fitness levels the opportunity to alter their outlook on health and wellness and ultimately to change their lives for good.
Head trainer at Adventure Boot Camp, Jason Barnard has worked with hundreds of women since taking on the Kirstenbosch camp three years ago. “There’s a lot to be said about being the only guy in an all women environment. I often find that new campers feel very self-conscious about how they look when they first start out at camp, knowing that they’re surrounded by other women eases their concern, which allows them to really get into the task at hand and it ensures a full body workout.”
The beauty of this of course, is that the real work – body toning and core muscle strength – gets achieved far more effectively and in a shorter amount of time. “Working in an all women environment is an eye opener – put a group of women together and you’re guaranteed an hour of fun. I’ve learnt a lot about how the female psyche works and can see why a women only exercise environment really works. More than the daily dose of laughter, seeing the transformation in a new camper after a few sessions is what really inspires me and the other women attending the camp. The group support is also just phenomenal.”
“In terms of strength, flexibility, bone density and body fat distribution, women are different to men,” says Jason. “At Adventure Boot Camp we created a workout that incorporates moves to work those difficult female spots and we stay away from steel weights and big machines and rely on body weight and objects found in their natural environment instead – think stairs or running around a beautiful park.”
“Ultimately, it’s about finding an exercise environment where you feel most comfortable,’ says Jason. “Women who are body conscious or even slightly shy definitely feel more relaxed in an all-female exercise group,” says Jason.
Adventure Boot Camp sessions are scheduled specifically with women top of mind – hour-long workouts are held early in the morning or late afternoon, one, three or five days a week, over four weeks and can accommodate the most unrelenting of timetables – busy moms, high flyers and fitness fanatics. A Flexi Option is available to those who need to swop between class times and venues anywhere in the country.
Adventure Boot Camp, which started ten years ago with one camp in Cape Town, now offers more than 100 camps nationwide, with franchises being operated out of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, Vanderbijlpark, Cape Town, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Durban, Polokwane and Potchefstroom.
