American luxury department store chain, Bloomingdales, will stock Bean There Coffee during the month of July to celebrate the launch of Disney’s The Lion King. The live-action remake of the 1994 animated classic promises stunning African scenery and an all-star cast of talking wildlife. To honour the film’s geographic roots, Bloomingdales will be stocking up on proudly African produce, including Bean There Fair Trade Coffee.
“We’re excited to expand into the US market, Bloomingdales has a history of philanthropy and is a world-class retailer. It’s an amazing opportunity to partner with them to celebrate African pride,” says Jonathan Robinson, founder of Bean There Coffee Company, South Africa’s first Certified Fairtrade roaster of African Coffee.
Robinson and his team have learned the value of practicing sustainable trade within the communities they source from. Bean There is committed to caring for the environment and uplifting local livelihoods. “It’s important for us to grow the communities we source our coffee from. Long-term direct fair trade is the best way to grow economies – especially in developing countries who face challenges from climate change to political conflict,” says Robinson.
Bean There only imports coffee from African countries, lowering the company’s carbon footprint and supporting local economies. They work with a number of co-operatives across the continent, ethically sourcing from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo and Kenya.
“We want our coffee to tell the story of our journey through the continent. Each roast reflects the diverse and distinct identity of its origin,” says Robinson.
Operating out of Johannesburg and Cape Town, with a network of proud coffee producers across Africa, Bean There follows the direct fair trade model, which makes fair payment for coffee a priority and protects small producers from exploitation. Bean There’s Democratic Republic of Congo coffee is 100% Ecocert Organic Certified, along with their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee. Their Tanzania Mbinga coffee is Rainforest Alliance Certified.
